The Alberta Standardbred Horse Association ("ASHA") along with Century Downs racetrack and casino hosted Pacing For Charity Sunday August 14 at Century Downs in Balzac, part of their "Caring Is Cool" initiative. One of five race weekends dedicated to raising money for deserving charities, an anonymous but very generous horseman from the High River area will be donating the proceeds from a horse to be auctioned at the annual Yearling Sale to charities chosen by ASHA. One of these charities was Autism Speaks Canada and I had the honour of being invited to attend in support of this wonderful organization. Three top drivers from Ontario, Jody Jamieson, Jack Moiseyev, and James MacDonald, donated their driving fees. Jody supported Autism Speaks, Jack drove for Breast Cancer, and James drove for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Many thanks to Colleen Haining and Fred Gillis of ASHA, Paul Ryneveld of Century Downs "Jody, James, and Jack", and the horse racing community in general. You would be hard put to find a more generous and caring group of people. They truly believe in giving back and "Caring Is Cool" is just one of many examples.
