Chestermere Schedules By-election Amid Ongoing Political Controversy

16 May 2024

Chestermere has scheduled a by-election for June 24, 2024, following a tumultuous period that saw the dismissal of the city’s mayor and several council members due to governance issues. This decision came after a special council meeting held on May 13, 2024, where it was also decided that nomination day would be May 27, 2024, marking the official start of the campaign period.
The political strife in Chestermere has been ongoing, stemming from a provincial investigation that uncovered significant administrative mismanagement. This led to the firing of the majority of the city council and the installation of an official administrator to ensure continuity of governance (Daily Hive Van).
In addition to setting the election date, the meeting addressed financial concerns. The interim Chief Administrative Officer was instructed to explore legal avenues to recover funds that were spent without proper authority, as highlighted in a financial inspection by Deloitte Inc. This step underscores the city’s commitment to rectifying past administrative oversights and restoring fiscal responsibility.
As Chestermere moves towards this critical electoral juncture, the community remains hopeful that new leadership will usher in an era of improved governance and transparency.
