Council debates motion to simplify pick-up of lake weeds

29 Sep 2016

Councilor Patrick Watson brought to council proposed changes to the Lake Weed Residential Bin Bylaw.
Currently lakefront residents are fined $250 if any material other than lake weeds is found in the lake weeds bin. Watson wants to allow compostable materials in the weed bins.
"Since weeds and compostable materials all end up in the same place, it just makes sense for them to be mixed together in one collection bin," said Watson in an e-mail.
He said that the Lakeside residents are doing the city a service by collecting the weeds.
"During the summer, Public Works removes floating weeds from the launch area and many residents collect them from areas near their properties. In essence, these residents help keep our lake beautiful for all to enjoy," he said.
Council passed his motion to have city administration consult with CUI and then amend the bylaw with a vote of five to two.
Watson would like to see this change in place by next spring when collection starts again.
"Lakeside residents will be able to add other organics, such as fallen apples, to their weed bin, which may result in fewer bins for pick-up," he said.
