Province moves to strengthen veterinary rules

21 Feb 2017

The provincial government passed the Veterinary Profession Amendment Act strengthening rules that veterinarians and veterinary technologists have to follow in their practices.
The changes came into effect on Feb. 1.
This act strengthens the rules relating to registration, advertising, illegal practices and continuing education for practitioners. The change also makes veterinary technologist into a protected title.
"Veterinarians and veterinary technologists play an important role in the care of our pets and animals.
"With these changes, Albertans can be confident that their animals are receiving the best care possible from veterinary professionals that are properly trained, provide safe and competent services, and comply with the highest professional standards," said Minister of Labour Christina Gray.
Chestermere Veterinary Clinic veterinarians Dr. Gabby Rotaru and Dr. Jeff Weissmann support the changes.
"Our practice is a strong believer in providing the highest standards for our patients and clients," said Rotaru, "The changes from the veterinary profession amendment act will only support what we already practice."
She is particularly happy that veterinary technologists are being recognize in the amendment.
"Registered veterinary technologists are as important as any other member of this profession and their input will bring many benefits in creating higher standards in our profession," said Rotaru.
