Province to eliminate some school fees with new budget

22 Mar 2017

With the release of the provincial budget, the NDP government is trying to save Alberta families money with the elimination of some school fees.
Known as Bill 1, an Act to Reduce School Fees, would stop school boards in Alberta from charging fees for instructional materials, supplies, and transportation fees for eligible students.
In a press release the province said that about 600,000 students and their families would benefit from the removal of instructional fees and 140,000 students would benefit from the reduction or removal of the transportation fee.
The province plans to provide additional funding to school boards to offset the loss of revenue caused by the elimination of the fees.
"Through Budget 2017, school boards would receive funding to offset the loss of fee revenues as a result of Bill 1.
"This would help ensure that boards would be able to maintain--or increase--the education programming they provide to students," said Minister of Education David Eggen.
